Even with Windows you can get it to work, so Linux should be a breeze. T-Mobile never complained about my data-use, even in months I used it /a lot/, with IMAP IDLE mailboxen open, Jaiku client and browsin' teh web.
Mac is no problem either. Even with "pocket internet" which has some limits set by T-Mobile no complaints from them about data usage. I was even surprised to see my new phone using 3G instead of GPRS (and as far as I can see without additional charges).

Naturally. That was the incentive. They seem to be the only ones to get flat fee.

UMTS is somehow harder to get working than GPRS. haven't figured it out yet myself.

It's dead easy with Leopard, there's even a wizard for it. Don't know about Linux
